Kagewani Episode 1 - Bobble Reviews

Here's another entry in my ever-increasing "probably only doing one episode" catalogue. I accidentally watched this before English subtitles came out, so I'm gonna grace you with my complete and intimate knowledge of Japanese language, subtleties, and culture.

This series is animated with a jumpy, shaky, paper cutout style, but it layers a HEAP of CG effects onto that. If you've seen Infinite Santa (which I know you have), it's a lot like that. Funny stuff.

The story here is about as layered and nuanced as we've come to expect from quirky shorter-length shows: there are giant monsters in this world, and someone's got to get eaten. Namely, it seems, a schoolteach's favorite Youtuber Tomtube personality.

Takeru the Cryptid Hunter, a hotshot with a couple of helpers, is a big phony fraud.

But when he meets a gigantic reptile-bird-dinosaur-puppet...he gets his integrity back.

He dashes through the forest, trying to avoid a similar fate, bouncing around like the little paper puppet he is, until he slips into a series of dramatic still shots.

Can this guy still be saved? Only if that teacher, his number one fan, can save him! But can his evil, pulsating, scarry eye really pull out a win? Only time – and most likely not my future posts – will tell.
