Comet Lucifer Episode 1: The Boy and the Vast Land – Beeble Reviews

We begin in a very peculiar, gear-ful observatory...

...and on a rock climber.

They live in a crapsack future filled with industry and dust. It appears the man owning the observatory is in charge of the world...

...and has a magnificent brow...

...while the boy is gonna be kicking off another Castle in the Sky adventure.

Except in his case, the girl is a gem that beaned him in the face.

“SWEEEET!! The 4052 Gem Rush is real!!”

Welcome to the world of Gurren Lagann X Eureka Seven X Italy, where cars fly and goggles have one lens! MC lives in a restaurant with his pops, but he still loves pokin’ around them mines. He’s a gem nerd, a Steven Universe fan if you will.

Holy cow, that thing’s gonna turn into a girl and then he’s gonna start singing Giant Woman or something

Meanwhile in THE CAVES, some soldiers prepare some army thing with their mine mechs.

Didn’t the government have mechs in Code Geass? Can I say this is that too?

Well that’s one way to introduce a heroine.

As you can see, this girl has red hair, so she shall be known as Red. Red’s being chased by some dude in an ugly car because she doesn’t want to marry him.

it’s still an ugly-ass car!

Alright, Car Gremlin.

So because of an inability to talk this all out, the chase continues all the way into the GRODY part of town! Here, they fall into that hole.

Yes the one all the way over there. A little hard to swallow, huh?

Where they fall hundreds of meters down onto solid stone unharmed. A little hard to swallow, huh?

So, ignoring MC’s fancy rock-climbing skills, they’re both stuck while MC fixes his flying plywood board.

Alright, I can buy that.

“AAAAAHHH!! Quick MC, protect me in all my headstrongness!!!!”

Ah thanks man the caveblindness took out my eyes and all

The water reacts and the army keeps a read on it, until finally we get a clear look at what they’re trying to get.

hey wait why wasn’t that gaping hole up above barricaded off or anything it’s just a hole

Like how in The Lion King they just have that Elephant Graveyard

And then they don’t have any big animals siting out there to make sure nobody goes near it

Come on now Mufasa like your kid’d ever listened to Zazu before why’d you expect him to keep Simba out of trouble nowadays step up your game mang

Hey NOW it’s Laputa!!!

“Try to play out this love triangle for the next three months of anime?”

Wouldn’t it be really funny if there was one of those shows where the magic girl comes down and the boy and girl meet them and then they both try to get the girl?

Ohhhhh that’s kinda like Adventure Time with the whole Bubblegum and Marceline thing except like if Finn and Marceline knew each other first. Damn, why didn’t they try to play with that relationship when she turned young? That whole cop-out is why I started disliking the show in the first place and it just kept getting worse. Still upset about that.

Okay Princess Nia comes with a robot alright I’m paying attention again.

So the magic pixie girl summons a killer robot with her brain! That’s a thing now!

These are the only two reactions a viewer can have at this stage; notice the lack of smiles.

So the whole episode was an excuse plot to get some kids far underground to meet a girl we haven’t had the chance to learn anything about yet, and see some kinda average robots fight. It’s a big shame that the characters are pretty boring so far (the whackiness of the whacky guys is too out of place, Red came in tough and independent but sucks in the end), they had to leave the nice Mediterranean backdrop in an excuse plot that really could have just been ‘boy does his mining thing, goes too deep in the caves and WOAH THE ROBOTS’ and we really only learn about the Poster Girl of the anime from the credits sequence, when we could have gotten all that delivered in a few lines of dialogue.

“Good morning!!” or “I LIKE TO EAT SOUP” would have sufficed.

It’s textbook so far, without enough ‘zazz. Maybe it’ll pick up in a few weeks, but the art’s nice. It’s not really doing anything original so far though, hence me naming every other story ever without falling in love with anything it does itself.
