There is a boy in a temple who is impudent and brash. He has to watch the place while his head priest father's away. His name is Ushio.

There is a monster trapped in the cellar with huge hair and humongous kneecaps. The Beast Spear keeping him there can only be removed by a human, so he has waited here for centuries. His name is Tora.

Their theme song is filled with jittery words and guttural rock howling. It will have you screeching "AAAHN" for hours to come.

And together the three make Ushio and Tora: The Animated Series.
Now, when Ushio falls into the cellar, the tiger gets to tell of his plight. Won't you free him? After you do so, he will eat you and bring humanity into a new darkness. If you, after seeing how Ushio and Tora unite under the power of the Beast Spear, guessed that Ushio would say "yes," then you clearly have not seen the runtime of this thing. We're only like seven minutes in; this scenario ain't over easy. Now, if you guessed that Ushio would say "no" and then later say "yes"...

Ushio goes to school. Ushio meets his friends. Ushio comes back. Ushio's ready to have some temple adventures!

But then all of a sudden his two friend-slash-love interests are at the door, come to retrieve a notebook or something. They've inadvertently brought just the thing to relieve him of his dreary monotony: worms.

Those aren't ordinary flying snake-things; they're demonic. Frightened and frustrated and convinced that he's hallucinating, left without the head priest father to turn to, Ushio goes to Tora –– and finds out that by opening the cellar door and unleashing Tora's power waves, he inadvertently brought a new darkness upon us all! If he doesn't stop it, his girlfriends will be creamed!
So now, at a loss, he removes the monster's spear...
...which, to their surprise, gives him a power aura and some hair extensions...
...and now they have to both fight evil demon youkai together, even if they don't like each other and one perpetually wants to eat the other!
Tune in next week when Ushio and Tora presumably eat rocks*!
* It's a joke on the name of the next episode.
