Charlotte Episode 1: I Think About Others - Bobble Reviews

The show opens with a teenage boy waxing philosophical. "I think, therefore I am," he recounts. "I think, therefore I am other people whom I share eye contact with for five seconds," he soon realizes as his eyes glow with psychic powers. He begins to realize his new ability's ramifications. And its limitations. So what will he make with it? Villain schemes? World peace?

Obviously with a smile like that, we would all expect nothing less than a Death Note.

...No, he just uses it to cheat on tests. He becomes the smart person in the class and memorizes the answers, and uses this to move up in the world. He hopes to use this not only to get into a great college, but also into the good graces of a delicate flower of a girl. Yumi's no ordinary girl, he says. No, she's the madonna of the school!

So he uses the power to engineer a truck crash to save her and win her heart! Yumi is so grateful that she takes him out to pancakes.

See? She's not like the other girls, she's a goddess.

The next day, Yummy sends him a text! A friendly, possibly-romantic text! She wants to meet him after school!

But then the school finds out he's been cheating on all his tests.

Desperate to save himself from expulsion (or at least save face for a moment), Light dashes away, through the school and through the courtyard! And past this mystery dude:

One man's woman is another trash's...

That's okay. Light doesn't need his honey. He'll just run away! Run really far away through the town! But explosions keep following him! What? Could this be a psychological illusion representing his oncoming guilt!? No! It's the power of that guy with glasses who, despite appearances, was not after Light's baby love. No, he's coming after Light with some sort of psychic power!!

After teleporting so fast that he seemed to be coming towards Light at super speed, he tackled him straight into the sky. Pictured: Light, who is hitting the river so fast he skips like a rock, and his attacker, riding him like a boogieboard.

That's Takajo, a teleporting psychic. He doesn't always teleport where he wants. There's also Tomori, an invisibility psychic. She can become invisible, but only for one person at a time. They tell Light Yagami that all the people with powers have to go to a special powers school and go under strict supervision.

Alright, that's all well and good. We've got the cast set up, we thoroughly decimated our main character. It's been a good run. What's the meat of the rest of the episode?
