Flip Flappers Episode 1: Pure Input - Bobble Reviews

This is the story of how Beeble Bear and Bobble Bear, the orange bear and blue bear who should never have met, met.

I mean, how else do you explain the sniffing.

As I'm sure many of you can tell, this is the latest directorial work from Kurihiko Ikuhara, the famous and distinctive anime director behind Mawaru Penguindrum, Yuri Kuma Arashi, and perhaps most famously Revolutionary Girl Utena. He likes to carry certain motifs and recurring themes throughout his work.

Like Europe-ness. That's certainly one of them.
And girls. And yuri. Yep, can't forget about the yuri.
Even the blue-haired twins who do instruments? Hm, I didn't think he was bringing that ba-- heyyy, this wasn't directed by Ikuhara at all! He wasn't even involved!
NO! NO!! ALL I WAS NOTICING IS HOW ALL ANIME KIND OF LOOK THE SAME!!! NO!!!! NO!!!!!

Okay, so it's just kind of an anime that looks great, instead of an Ikuhara anime that looks great. While this episode is kind of light and fluffy, the theme song is not. What can we apparently expect? Let's dissect this a little.

It's gonna get over-the-top depressing...
...because of racial tensions in the United States...
...circa 1920 (because it is called "Flip Flappers," and that was the time of the "flappers")...
...and the pink-haired one will be unable to move due to a debilitating disease, so the only way she can attack
is by spinning around without moving as missiles shoot haphazardly from her body.

Flip Flappers is about these two girls. One is ordinary and she's named Cocona. No, not Bobble, not even Coconut, just Cocona. Since she's ordinary, she's trying to decide what college she wants to go to. But there's this other girl. No, not Haruko Vespa, and not even Dandy in Space, but Papika (no, not the one from the movie Papika). And there's this robot that Papika knows, and it ties them up and almost lifts up their skirts, but it's so that they can go to Pure Illusion. Yes I'm making this sound as awful as possible on purpose, how did you know?

But the show's not making itself sound much better.

Pure Illusion is a beautiful snow world. It's really nice. On the one hand, this show is really

this,

and very

THIS,

but it's also a little...

...uhh...she's wearing under--no...a swim--no...bonda--no.....
It looks kind of like anime battle armor for girls. Sure. Yeah. Close enough.

And the show plot is obscure on purpose. Haruko wants to find something that grants wishes, and the show is trying to charm us with mystery.

And with this (works on some viewers).

But there's trouble! The frozen trees are actually beasts that take things! We gotta get an action sceeeeene!

BITCH YOU NEVER EVEN WEAR GLASSES
*I know even she said she didn't need them she probably wore them once earlier I'm just making a funnie

But Surfing Playboy Bunny Girl From Daicon IV Anime Convention Short Film can't quite do it -- she falls into the water, which is conveniently also starting to freeze over! What does Cocona do? What could she possibly do?

...I mean, what could she possibly do that I won't immediately want to delete from my browser histo--

NO!!!!! NO!!!!!! NNNNNNOOOOOOOO

Phew! Guess all that was is how girls go Super Saiyan. Wait, that's even worse.
BITCH

When their fantastical adventure is over, they return to the real world, and Dandy does that thing that all charming anime girls do where they're smiling with their eyes open at first, but then they bob their head a little and their eyes close and we go, woooooah, and because it's the end of the episode, it's sunset. I don't even need to provide a screencap because you already have the image in your head. But let's have it anyway so you can check your answers!

We all got 110! (Bonus points for guessing her line.)

Tune in next time when

These credits are adorable!
